ABOUT YWCA

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) is a movement working for the empowerment, leadership and rights of women, young women and girls in more than 120 countries. The members and supporters include women from many different faiths, ages, backgrounds, beliefs and cultures. Their common goal is that “by 2035, 100 million young women and girls will transform power structures to create justice, gender equality and a world without violence and war; leading a sustainable YWCA movement, inclusive of all women.”

YWCA is a human rights-based organization with activities across the world such as advocacy of gender equality and women’s empowerment, trainings on SRHR and HIV, dialogues between young girls and religious leaders and across generations. The World YWCA states its purpose as: “Develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the world to achieve human rights, health, security, dignity, freedom, justice and peace for all people”.

YWCA of Guwahati

YWCA of Guwahati was started to cater to the needs of the society which needed immediate and diligent attention to that strata of the society which is often ignored and who undergo the most suffering. The strategic goal and inherent values of YWCA is to provide care and a helping hand to women who need support and who have a need for someone to give them hope to live again after the suffering and the emotional burnout felt by the women and YWCA becomes this beacon of hope for thousands of women irrespective of caste or creed, religion or race.

YWCA of Guwahati was established more than fifty decade ago and is affiliated to World YWCA through the National body YWCA of India. It has gone from strength to strength with each passing year with active participation of the members and staff of YWCA of Guwahati. It has been actively engaged in working towards women empowerment through the various departments and many projects which contribute towards the wellbeing of women through women empowerment projects, providing affordable education and vocational training to the students with a emphasis on skill development, providing a helping hand to the underprivileged women of the society by providing shelter homes, working for environmental change and protection of the environment, fighting for the victims and getting them justice and generate awareness about their individual rights and teaching the society about religious tolerance through our various forums on Interfaith dialogue.

YWCA has tried in its endeavor to bring a paradigm shift in the lives of women through its various platforms and in this journey the civil society, the community and Government has been a big support for the organization and YWCA is honored to have the above organizations as contributors to the realization of the vision of the organization.
