YWCA ENGLISH SCHOOL

YWCA School was started in 1974 at Satribari as a project of the YWCA of Guwahati with an aim to impart quality education to the teachers.

We believe that every child come with their unique skill sets and personalities. Therefore we work on an education model which caters to each child by fostering on academic excellence and all-round development which results in the holistic growth of the child.

Our accomplishments over the past forty years exemplify our core strength – our caring and committed teaching and non teaching force. They imbibe our students with values and morale and makes learning a joyful experience. For the YWCA School, it’s a family affair.

History

After the creation of the new state of Meghalaya in 1973, a large number of officials and other employees working in the Assam Secretariat and other Government offices who had to come down to Guwahati found it difficult to get their children admitted in to the few English Medium schools that existed then in Guwahati. The YWCA Guwahati rose to the occasion and Ms. Constance Anbu, Ms. Clara Singha and Dr. Renu Prabha Momin Bordoloi, prominent members of this organization and educationist took the initiative of starting an English medium school at Satribari.

At the initial stage they had to face many difficulties, mainly financial, but with courage and conviction had overcome them and started the school with three classes. The nursery and classes A and B. Enrolled 97 pupils in a bamboo thatched house. Since the school was established with the aim of providing best possible primary education, it was kept at the primary level for some years. But due to public pressure the management reconsidered their decision and classes up to V was introduced in 1982. Thereafter, every year a new class was introduced till it became a full fledged High school in 1987.

The school started in 1974 with three honorary teachers under the able guidance of late Ms. Anbu, superintendent of White Memorial Hostel, who had many years of teaching experience in Pine Mount School, Shillong and Nichols school, Guwahati. Till 1982 none was appointed permanently as headmistress and Mrs. Senehi Das was appointed as the acting headmistress. In 1984 Ms. Lydia Singha, retired headmistress of Golaghat Mission High School joined the school as the headmistress. With her appointment as Headmistress, having many years of administrative and teaching experience, the school made rapid progress in all aspects. On the retirement of Ms. Singha in 1990 after rendering valuable service to the institution, Mrs. B. J. Basumatary, another accomplished lady, took over charge as its headmistress. She continued here till 2004. After that in 2005 Mrs. Jane Pio took over the charge as headmistress and continued till June 2017. After that from July, 2017 Mrs. Gitali Choudhury Ghosh has been continuing as acting headmistress in this institution.

YWCA English School is a co-educational institution open to students belonging to all communities irrespective of caste, creed, religion or of their economic background. It is a private school, run by a managing committee with advisors and members, without any financial aid or assistance from the government. The school maintains a brilliant and highly qualified teaching staff and has shown uniformly good examination result over the years. The most remarkable achievement of the school was the second and third batches in 1989 and 1990 when two students secured the 19th and 11th positions respectively among the first twenty rank holders under SEBA. Needless to say that YWCA English school occupies a pride of place among the best school in the city.
