YWCA SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

YWCA Senior Secondary School is a co-educational institution that welcomes students from all communities, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or economic background. It operates as a private school under the guidance of a Managing Committee, supported by advisors and members, and functions without any government financial aid.

The school is known for its qualified, experienced teaching staff and a consistent record of strong academic performance. Among its notable achievements, two students from the second and third graduating batches in 1989 and 1990 secured the 19th and 11th ranks respectively in the SEBA board examinations. Over the years, the school has continued to maintain excellent results, with students gaining admission into reputed schools and colleges.

Formerly known as YWCA English School, the institution now proudly stands as YWCA Senior Secondary School, holding a place of distinction among the leading schools in the city.

OUR JOURNEY

Following the creation of the state of Meghalaya in 1973, many government officials and employees who relocated to Guwahati faced difficulties securing admission for their children in the limited number of English medium schools available at the time. Rising to meet this pressing need, YWCA Guwahati—led by Ms. Constance Anbu, Ms. Clara Singha, and Dr. Renu Prabha Momin Bordoloi, all dedicated members and educators—took the initiative to establish an English medium school in Satribari.

Despite significant financial challenges, the founders pressed on with determination and began the school with three classes: Nursery, A, and B. These initial classes enrolled 97 students and were conducted in a modest bamboo-thatched house. Committed to providing quality primary education, the school initially remained at the primary level. However, due to public demand, Classes I to V were introduced by 1982, and over the next few years, the school steadily expanded—becoming a full-fledged high school by 1987.

The school began with three honorary teachers, guided by the late Ms. Constance Anbu, a seasoned educator who had taught at Pine Mount School in Shillong and Nichol’s School in Guwahati. Until 1982, Ms. Senehi Das served as acting headmistress. In 1984, Ms. Lydia Singha, a retired headmistress from Golaghat Mission High School, took over leadership, bringing her administrative experience and helping the school grow in all dimensions. After her retirement in 1990, Mrs. B.J. Basumatary led the institution until 2004, followed by Mrs. Jane Pio from 2005 to June 2017. Since July 2017, Mrs. Gitali Choudhury Ghosh has served as the acting headmistress.

In 1996, the school expanded further by introducing a Junior College for Women, offering Humanities under AHSEC. Today, this section has been integrated into the school as part of a full-fledged Senior Secondary School.

In February 2021, Dr. Bobita Das Saju was appointed as the Principal, overseeing both the Secondary and Senior Secondary sections. With over 25 years of academic and administrative experience, she brings a fresh vision and dynamic leadership, entrusted with carrying the legacy of the school forward.
